Susan Stein visits schools and
universities throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia
2023-2024 partnering with teachers to craft unique and age
appropriate workshops and lessons that delve into topics of racial
justice, civil rights and history that integrate into existing
curricula or stand alone. Using first-hand testimonies, diaries,
literature, and art, Susan brings lost and unheard voices to
students and asks them to listen, grapple, and add their voices to
foster empathy and inspire change. Her work focuses on the
Holocaust, Rwandan and other genocides, Japanese prison camps,
African American enslaved person narratives.
Susan Stein is an Educator-in-Residence
in conjunction with the exhibit The Girl in the Diary: Searching
for Rywka from the Lodz Ghetto. Through on-site and off-site
programming, Stein will work with schools and the community to
unpack diaries and letters written by young people during the
Holocaust and foster inter-generational discussions about how these
documents—personal writings, receipts, ticket stubs, ration
cards–speak to us now. Together, participants will use writing,
music, and theater to create artwork in response to the
exhibit.
Susan Stein will give a talk,
Finding Etty, describing her process of adapting the
play and researching the life of Etty Hillesum as well as reading
from her upcoming book, Finding Etty.
